Artist Statement
I started with photography. I have loved taking pictures since I was a teenager. I think my favorite camera was the Polaroid camera where I would take a photo, and watch it develop with my own eyes.
Landscapes have been my passion in recent work, bringing the beauty of the world that we live in, and being able to capture its beauty! I also love to shoot portraits of people. I took a lot of pictures when my children were growing up.
I believe that it’s important to know the history of photography so you have an understanding of the magic you can do as a photographer. Not just taking a picture, but the way you frame your subject, what is in the background, and what it is you are saying with your photo. It is true that everyone sees things differently. So what one see’s in a picture someone else may see differently. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to learn how to develop my own roll of film and then print my own pictures. This was the best experience of my life, and it makes me appreciate the technology that we have now that makes it so much easier to print a photo. I love Photoshop as it allows us to touch up our photos within minutes.
I have taken acrylic and oil painting, and I enjoy them both. Painting and Photography are very relaxing to me. It helps me forget everything else while I concentrate on my artwork. I have also learned to make my own canvas to paint on.
I have been at Lake Tahoe Community College for three years now, and when I first started in black and white film I had no idea it could be so much work. A photo is not just a photo, but also so much more. Art has taught me to take more time to look at the world so that I can capture it’s beauty and put it onto a canvas or print it in a photo. Everyday brings another amazing view, so many people do not take the time to see.
